How To Train a Puppy to Walk on a Leash

Here in this video we can learn a little from our Aussie trainer friends about how to train a puppy to walk on a leash.  This can be a little bit of a confusing thing for most puppies, because they really feel that they should be allowed to roam free!  But by starting small and going slow, you will see how quickly your puppy will respond to some gentle leadership and coaxing.

The trainer here starts with a simple way to use some gentle tugs on the leash along with some treat rewards in order to help the puppy learn it’s own name.  Of course, learning its name is an important part of the equation, but it may be one that could get overlooked.  It is also the first introduction to the leash and it should be as positive of an experience as possible.

Maverick is an 8 week old puppy and is a great example of a young pup trying to learn its name and how to respond to the leash.  He also does what all puppies do so much of – sleep!  He is incredibly adorable as he simply flops over and takes a nap while waiting for the guys to get the video going and again at the end of the video.  Which is a great time to remind you that short training sessions are best and if you can work in 3-6 training sessions a day, that is ideal.

Learning how to train a puppy to walk on a leash is a little different than teaching an older dog, but still requires a lot of patience and commitment.  Puppies can’t remain focused for long stretches, so several short training sessions work best. With older dogs, you can train a lot longer and don’t have to have several sessions a day.  But finding a quiet spot to train and having some treats handy is important no matter what the age of the dog is!
